Healthy Alternatives to Halloween Candy

Ghosts and goblins, princesses and superheroes, children of all ages (and their parents!) are excited to dress up for this fun-filled day. As a parent of four young kiddos, I tend to get more excited than they do. Young kids who don’t yet care what they wear, means mommy gets to pick out all matching costumes!! 🙂 Last year the kids dressed as Wizard of Oz (Dorothy, Lion, Tinman, and Scarecrow) and the year prior the boys were the 3 Little Pigs, Lily was Little Red Riding Hood and Daddy was the big bad wolf to tie it all together. This year, Lily will be Merida from Brave, the Disney movie, and our boys will be Merida’s triplet brothers when they turned into the little bears. We’re still deciding if Mom and Dad will dress up this year 🙂

Costumes aside, Halloween can be a nightmarish flood of candy from school and trick-or-treating. To change things up , try a new healthy alternative to candy (don’t tell the kids). I opt for non-food ideas to include those kids with food allergies or intolerances. Try to stay away from offering or accepting homemade foods unless you personally know the family.

Here is a list of ideas to get you started:

Non-Food Ideas

Glow sticks
Pencils
Erasers
Stickers
Pre-inked stamps
Jump rope
• Sidewalk chalk
Bubbles
Temporary tattoo
Mini pack of crayons
Coloring or activity book
• Pretend jewelry
• Stencils
Yo-yo
Slinky
Bouncy Ball
Mini Play Dough
• Small kids book

Food ideas

• Whole fruit (such as apple, banana, orange)
• Mini Bottle of water
• Box of raisins or dried fruit
• Individually wrapped cheese stick
• Applesauce pouch
• Trail mix or nuts (take caution, as peanut and nuts are a common food allergen)
• Individually wrapped whole grain crackers (keep in mind, this is not safe for children with gluten intolerance unless it is clearly marked that it is gluten free)

On Halloween we like a variety of the options listed. This way we can hand out an assortment to trick-or-treaters … and a bonus for the really good costumes 🙂
